Charlie Pickett – Bar Band Americanus

I never really heard of Charlie Pickett, or I should say I’ve never really heard any of his music, I remember hearing about him during the 80’s, but I wasn’t really into music back then. So when I came across a review of his new album, Bar Band Americanus, over at No Depression, I was a little impressed by what I read.

I listened to a couple of tracks they had posted on the No Depression website, one was Overtown, it’s about a junky looking for a fix, going to get some of that Overtown Brown.

it ain’t the best but it’s always around

The other track is All Love All Gone, of the two, I think Overtown is the better song. If you’ve read my post about the Burroughs book Junky then you know I have an interest in junky behavior (I don’t know why). At the end of Overtown you hear the “junky” talking to his dealer asking him to front him some dope.

I’ll pay you Wednesday, I promise

he says.

If you’ve read the book Junky, and listen to this song you might come to the conclusion I did, and that is Junkies haven’t changed at all since the fifties. You get a feel of a certain kind of atmosphere when reading Junky and listening to Overtown I got that same dark and gritty feel all over again.
