Citizens of Contrary Knowledge – You’re What You Wish You Are

A little bit funky and a little bit rock, a good mixture of both genres makes for a classic in the making, that’s what we potentially have here, a classic in the making. Citizens of Contrary Knowledge, or C.O.C.K. for short (yeah, I know), are a band coming out of New York City by way of the rest of the United States.

You’re What You Wish You Are is the end product of the amalgam of musicians who are at their core musicians, I mentions above that this was a classic in the making, it’s one of those album that I think will stand the test of time, (and it also depends on their next efforts) and being their debut album that’s quite an accomplishment. There wasn’t a song on the album that I didn’t like, it’s a good mixture of songs, rock, funk, and some ballads.

Friend is a ballad if sorts, a ballad of friendship I guess you could say, it speaks of the value of an honest friend (a friend wouldn’t lie), a positive message about treating your friends the way you want them to treat you, (reading that back makes it sound a little adolescent but the track doesn’t come across that way). Swallow is one of the songs that adds some funk to the album, it seems like a contradictory song to me, on a whole the album preaches a positive message about honesty, but Swallow seems to want me to hold my tongue, I’m probably missing the point, it wouldn’t be the first time.

All in all, this is a good album that I think WILL be heard and loved for a time to come, it has staying power, I can see myself taking this album out every week to get my funk on.
