Ryan Bingham and The Dead Horses – Mescalito

Man, this is such a good album I can’t even begin to describe the kinds of feelings it invokes. Released in 2007, I bought the CD as soon as I heard the first track on the Lost Highway website, it has a familiar vibe to it, like when you see something that reminds you of something but you can’t quite place what it is, or like when you try to answer someone’s question and the answer is on the tip of your tongue but your brain won’t let it out; yeah, that kind of familiarity but without the frustration.
From start to finish the album is varying degrees of awesomeness, there are a few songs that make me think of the 1979 movie Wanda Nevada, it also makes me think of that old movie about the Army Ranger who comes home from Vietnam to a hippy commune and commences to whooping anybody who bothers the hippies, and he wears a big black hat, sort of like Ryan’s on the cover of the alum, that’s probably why I think of those movies.
There is one song, Hard Times that hits home whenever I listen to it, if you’ve ever been through “hard times” then you know what I mean. And Don’t Wait For Me is another great song. It’s a working man’s album, every track seems like it could be the fight song for the blue collar working class, it just hits very close to home with me for some reason, and it’s an album about searching for things, about losing things and about sometimes finding things.
