After Dark Horrorfest III: The Broken

Every year After Dark Horrorfest brings us 8 Films to Die For, 8 horror films are chosen to take on tour around the country and then released on DVD.

The Broken is a very strange film, not necasarily scary, but definatley strange. I can’t really say too much about the movie itself without giving too much away. But it stars Lena Headey (from 300 and Sarah Connor Chronicles) and it takes on the old horror myth that there are things on the other side of the mirror. Now, usually this is a good concept for a movie and it works with The Broken but it leaves a lot of unanswered questions.

I didn’t really enjoy this film as much as I wanted, the trailer looked pretty good but I found myself getting bored about 40 minutes into the movie. There’s not a lot of dialog in the film which I thought hurt the movie, mainly because the film brings up a few questions that needed to be answered, like why are these things happening to this family. There is an explanation of sorts but you have to remember first at the scene at the hospital when you see the last scene at the hospital. I would’ve liked something more.

Lastly, Lena Headey is a great actress but she did not fit this role, the character she played was supossed to be scared and confused and the more confused she bacame to more scared she was supposed to be, but Lena Headey exudes strength and power, and it was something she just couln’t cover up. All in all the film is mediochre but the story is an interesting take on the whole Through the Looking Glass thing.
