Shooter Jennings – Electric Rodeo

The Electric Rodeo is by far the best material Shooter Jennings has ever released (more on that at a later date), I think it captures Shooters persona as perfect as a picture, it’s energetic and rough. It has a fast pace but still keeps that country twang that keeps him planted firmly where he needs to be. At this point in his career Electric Rodeo is Shooters (and the .357’s) jewel, if he was inclined he could’ve retired and been very proud of the small but absolutely fantastic body of work he had thus far.
From the opening title track, Electric Rodeo to the closing track It Ain’t Easy, there’s only one weak link in an otherwise perfect record, Alligator Chomp should had been left off the album, it seemed a little silly to me. But the rest of the album is great; Gone to Carolina is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. It speaks of going home and you substitute just about any song, like Alabama for instance. The track Some Rowdy Women, Shooter sounds so much like Waylon that I thought it was. Hair of the Dog is the best song ever recorded by Shooter and the .357’s, it is a sad song about just being dog tired and hurting all over, but sometimes the best cure for what’s wrong is the thing that makes you hurt.
Like I said, this is an awesome album; there aren’t too many albums by any artist that can touch Electric Rodeo, it’s an autobiography of Shooters life. It depicts his feelings about his Father and what he’s been trying to accomplish in country music. It’s what you would expect from someone at the pinnacle of their career, and it may be that’s just what we have.
