Shooter Jennings – The Wolf
Now I’ve alluded to Shooter’s glory days being past him, even though his career is only just getting started really, and that may well be the truth or it may not be, I’m sure he has a lot more writing left in him. But if The Wolf is any indication to what the future hold then it very bleak indeed. I don’t know what happened, maybe he and Leroy Powell were fighting (he left the band shortly before the release of The Wolf) and the writing suffered or if the well has truly dried up, no one knows. All I know is that The Wolf is subpar to what is expected from Shooter Jennings and the .357’s.
It’s just a mixed up and listless, there’s no energy in the album what so ever. The edge that made Put the O Back in Country and Electric Rodeo is completely gone, and whoever convinced Shooter to put Walk of Life on the album must be a smooth talker indeed, that song has no place on The Wolf at all, and what’s worse is they made it the first single from the album, and even went so far as to make a video.
But the album isn’t completely without merit, This Ol Wheel is a pretty good song, not what I think Shooter and the .357’s are capable of but you do get a sense of their potential. But I haven’t given up on Shooter and the band, I’m looking forward to hearing some brand new stuff and I’m hoping it will be sometime soon. There is a “Best Of” album but we won’t even get into that. So, Shooter if you’re out there let’s get writing on some new material so you can get to recording, okay?
